Navigating conflicting advice

inner compass

Finding your inner compass- conflicting advice- Critical thinking in personal growth- a tricky one!

Navigating all the conflicting things!

Realisations This Week: Everyone Operates from Their Own Map

Each person you meet will view life—and you—through the lens of their beliefs, training, or values. This means their advice or perspective often reflects where they’re at, not necessarily where you are.

Here’s an example:

  • If you talk to someone feeling depressed, they may say, “Everything is too much. I just can’t cope.”
  • A Chinese medicine doctor might tell you something is out of balance in your energy or organs.
  • A GP might focus on symptoms, prescribing medication or referring you to a specialist.
  • A surgeon may recommend x because of x y z based on their information
  • Someone thriving may share stories of miracles and breakthroughs.
  • A shamanic healer could point to ancestral challenges or strengths tied to your lineage.
  • An ancient master might encourage you to focus on self-mastery.
  • A yoga teacher could recommend asanas or breathing techniques.
  • An NLP or CBT therapist might talk about managing your mind or reframing beliefs.
  • A somatics teacher could guide you inward to process emotions.
  • An astrologer might explain planetary retrogrades or cosmic influences.

The beauty is, all of these can be true. Each reflects the worldview of the person you’re engaging with.

Now don’t get me wrong- if I had a massive accident I’d be the first to A&E for help and thank goodnes for them – this is for the ones with something more ‘grey; not deadly but causing challenges- where do you go?

Why This Matters:

The world is full of advice, perspectives, and tools, but it’s crucial to remember:
People meet you where they are, not necessarily where you are.

This is why critical thinking and self-awareness are so important. When faced with so many inputs, you must pause and ask:

  • What do I need right now?
  • How can I simplify this?
  • Am I stressed? What’s causing it? What’s needed to ease it?
  • If I need help who can i speak to who has a lot of wide knowledge and experience?

The Invitation:

Can you tap into that ‘gut’ or feeling?

Learn to listen to your own inner compass. Advice can be valuable, but the answers are within you. The more you know yourself, the easier it is to discern what resonates and what doesn’t.

So, wherever you are today, ask yourself:

  • What feels true for me in this moment?
  • In what ways can I make things simple, easy, and supportive for myself?

The world is full of maps, but you are your best guide.
