The Irony of December… Ah, December. Just saying it makes me take a deep breath.
The Irony of December… For some, it’s the most magical time of the year, full of twinkling lights, laughter, and the sparkle of childlike wonder. But, for others, December can feel like an emotional rollercoaster—a bittersweet blend of joy, nostalgia, and the sting of grief or loneliness.
Maybe you’re blessed with a close-knit family and kids who light up at the sight of a Christmas tree. Or maybe, this season highlights the empty spaces: the loved ones who’ve passed, the family dynamics that never quite fit the festive ideal, or the pressure of society’s expectations.
I feel that sting today, and I’ll be honest—it’s hard not to feel the weight of how my life “should” look at this time of year as a woman in her 40s. But here’s the thing: I’ve decided not to give my power away to that nonsense. What about you? What emotions does December stir in your heart?
Let’s explore how to navigate both the joys and sorrows of this time of year, with love and care for ourselves.
Self-Care Practices for December
December invites us to slow down, reflect, and nurture ourselves. Here are some of my favorite ways to stay grounded and connected:
1. Start and End with Gratitude
Each morning, say out loud 12 things you’re grateful for. In the evening, write them down in your journal. Gratitude has a magical way of shifting your energy into a higher frequency.
2. Create Meaningful Connections
Surround yourself with people who make you feel seen and loved. If that’s not possible, focus on connecting with yourself. One of my personal rituals is lighting candles each morning as an offering of gratitude for the people and things I hold dear.
3. Embrace Traditions
Bake your favorite holiday treats, play those old Christmas songs, or craft handmade gifts. It doesn’t have to be perfect—what matters is the joy and love you pour into it.
4. Kindness
Random acts of kindness (like donating to a cause or volunteering at a dog sanctuary) can lift your spirit while spreading a little light to others.
Navigating the Tough Bits
Let’s face it—December isn’t all sparkles and joy. If you’re struggling, remember this: it’s okay to feel what you feel.
Acknowledge and Express Your Emotions
Grief, loneliness, or sadness often bubble up at this time of year. Allow yourself to express them—write a poem, call a friend, or join a sharing circle. Your emotions are valid and deserve space.
Learn the Power of “No”
Overwhelm is a real thing in December. Give yourself permission to say “no” to anything that drains your energy or pulls you out of alignment. Protect your peace.
Winter Solstice: A Moment for Stillness
December 21st marks the Winter Solstice—the shortest day of the year. It’s the perfect opportunity to pause, reflect, and invite simplicity into your life.
- Decorate candles and practice candle gazing for a meditative moment.
- Sing mantras, breathe deeply, and find the stillness between the chaos.
- Use this day as a reset—a chance to anchor yourself in calm before the holiday rush.
- Lovely meditations to create ‘gaps’ to be still https://insighttimer.com/davidji
